OK, there’s no denying it, and we we might as well embrace it. It gets cold here. There, we said it. We once had the record for the lowest recored temperature of -21.6, on 3 July 1995. Now Ranfurly reckon they found a record in someones dressing drawer to say they were once colder. They can have that, we’re still happy with a podium at No. 2 spot.
“This morning’s was -2.9C. We’ve got a wind coming through tonight, so we’ll probably get down to -5C, which is quite mild.”
Sam Leask, local farmer
But winter comes with some benefits. While Queenstown and Wanaka go crazy with skiers and snowboarders in brightly coloured, giant puffer jackets, in Ophir things get quiet – we prefer to apres ski, putting on a hat and heading down to Blacks for a whisky by the fire.
Winter is also curling time, with representatives from every small town and village descending on the curling rinks at Naseby and Alexandra to curl, and, well, drink whisky.
